Common questions before you buy
Everything people usually ask before fitting a water softener. Still unsure? Call 0116 276 3334.
Is this a DIY job or do I need a plumber?
The softener plumbs into your incoming mains and needs a drain connection for regeneration, so it's more involved than a push-fit filter. A confident DIYer can fit it with the right kit, but many customers prefer a plumber. Fitting kits are available separately for 15mm, 22mm and 1 inch pipework, so pick the size that matches your pipes, or call us on 0116 276 3334 if you're unsure.
Can I drink the softened water?
Softened water is fine for most people for drinking, cooking and hot drinks, though it carries slightly raised sodium, so many households keep one unsoftened tap or add a separate drinking water filter for the kitchen. If you're mixing formula for a baby or you're on a sodium-restricted diet, use a hard or filtered tap for drinking. Our under-sink filters cover that side if you want both.
How much salt does it use and what does it cost to run?
Because it's meter-controlled, it only regenerates based on the water you actually use rather than on a fixed timer, so it uses just 0.68kg of salt per regeneration. That keeps salt and water use low compared with timer-based softeners. You'll top up the salt periodically, and a 25kg bag is available to add to your order.
Do I still need a water filter as well?
A softener and a filter do different jobs. The EMS10 removes the hardness minerals that cause limescale, protecting your appliances, pipes and boiler. It doesn't filter chlorine or improve the taste of your drinking water, so if better-tasting water is also a priority, you'd pair it with one of our under-sink filters. Not sure what you need? We're happy to advise.
